National Night Out 2010
On Tuesday October 5, 2010 neighborhoods throughout Austin are invited to join with thousands of communities nationwide for the 27th Annual National Night Out.
'National Night Out' is designed to:
1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
2. Generate support and participation in crime efforts.
3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations.
4. Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
On October 5, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., residents in neighborhoods throughout Austin and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and EMS paramedics. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks will all occur simultaneously throughout the city and nationwide.
This evening is a great opportunity for citizens and law enforcement to partner up against crime. We are encouraging everyone to come meet your neighbors and commit to help law enforcement reduce crime in your community. It is time to show the criminal element that we as a society are not going to just sit back and let crime occur in our neighborhoods. APD will make every effort to have a 1st responder stop by each party that is registered by the deadline date of September 15, 2010.
Please be aware that unforeseen circumstances may limit the number of 1st responders available to attend even those parties who register early.
JOIN NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2010
1. Get all of your neighbors to turn on their porch lights.
2. Organize a block party or some type of neighborhood event.
3. Fill out and return the 2010 National Night Out Application (descargar aplicación en español) as soon as possible and mail it to the address below. You may also fax your application to (512) 974-6222.
(You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or download the application. You may download the Reader for free.)
After completing the application, return it to:
Austin Police Department
Community Liaison Office
P.O. Box 689001
Austin, Texas 78768-9001
Everyone who completes an application will be notified via mail or e-mail before the event where to come by and pick up a National Night Out bag. The bags will contain crime prevention information, posters, party invitations and items for use at your party.
If your neighborhood association has a Web page, you are welcome to create a link to the Austin Police Department National Night Out Web page at www.cityofaustin.org/police/nno.htm or create your own.

ABC's "My Generation" Premiere
Did anyone get to see ABC's "My Generation" last night? Did you know that the show is actually filmed in Austin? We got to see a lot of local landmarks and our downtown skyscrapers. Below is a comment from a viewer:
"I really liked it! Has a lot of potential, and they really set up a great deal of plot lines in this first hour!Looking forward to where the stories/characters will go (& especially felt for the Kenneth "nerd" character -- poor guy).I didn't think it was too slow at all - maybe others felt that because of the interviews, but I thought they helped us get into the characters better). The previews for the birthing look great. Can't wait!"
As some of you may know, the 100 Club of Central Texas hosts its 10th golf tournament at Twin Creeks Country Club in Cedar Park, November 8th. We are planning to invite the cast of "My Generation" to join us! Keep your fingers crossed ... we'll keep you posted.

Austinite Stars in ABC Comedy-Drama "My Generation"
Austinite Mehcad Brooks stars in ABC's "My Generation" premiering this Thursday at 7 PM.
My Generation is a one-hour comedy-drama, which is being produced by ABC Studios, follows a group of high school classmates in Austin, Texas in 2000, then revisits their lives ten years after graduation.
The series follows an eclectic group of young adults whose lives were being filmed for a documentary just before their graduation from Greenbelt High School in Austin, Texas in 2000. The group includes the Overachiever, the Beauty Queen, the Nerd, the Punk, the Jock (Mehcad), the Brain, the Rich Kid, the Rebel, and the Wallflower. Their hopes and dreams for the future were recorded, and as they meet up ten years later, they realize that things don't always go as planned. The series is set in present-day with flashbacks to the past.
Filming began in mid-March.[13] Craig Gillespie directed the pilot. In May 2010, ABC announced it has added the series to the 2010-11 schedule with a fall 2010 premiere planned.[14]
So tune in this Thursday at 7 PM for "My Generation" on ABC. Let us know what you think about the show and our own Mehcad Brooks' performance.

Run with the Heroes 5K Run, Sunday, September 12th
The "Run with the Heroes" 5K is a race with a purpose.... more than just winning! It was designed to bring communities together with first responders, to honor fallen heroes of emergency services and show support for their families. Emergency responders (which include Police, Fire and EMS) are one large family, and each year "Run with the Heroes" honors fallen brothers and sisters. The 2010 "Run with the Heroes" honors three: Drew Bolin - Austin Police Department, Tracy Chambers - Williamson County EMS and James Glass - Austin Fire Department.
Each year, Austin Police officers team with Special Olympics Texas' athletes to run the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of Special Olympic Games.
